Princess Loves Camp!

The memory sharing continues with Assistant Camp Director Princess, who takes a moment to share with all of us the beauty of being raised in a camp environment and how that has impacted her life and her love of educating children!

I can’t imagine my career not including children. As a Kindergarten teacher, people constantly ask me how I have the patience to deal with 5 year olds who are needy, impatient, demanding, and impulsive. In my eyes, they are loving, witty, accepting, and eager to learn. I couldn’t picture a day without them. As summer arrives, my colleagues are ready to take a break, but I’m eagerly getting ready to switch hats from Kindergarten teacher to Assistant Camp Director.

It’s impossible to envision a summer without camp. In fact, I’ve never had a summer without camp! As a young child, I went to camp with my mom, who was a camp director, and “helped” her around the office. When I was old enough to attend camp at age 3, I looked forward to our luaus and swimming in the little pool. I returned to camp for the next 11 years not because I had to, but because of what camp offered me. Camp allowed me to develop self-esteem and confidence, make new friendships, challenge myself in non-academic activities, and while I didn’t realize it at the time, offered me some of the most important role models in my life.

I continued going to camp not because my mom was there, but because I was made a star. My counselors always made me feel special. I would go to camp hoping they would recognize me showing an act of kindness or trying something for the first time. I would come home with handmade awards that I would demand be hung on the fridge. My counselors taught me how to be a better person.
I often dreamed of the day I could be a counselor. From my different co-counselors I learned everything about campers from how to handle homesickness, motivate them, how to befriend and discipline children. I was confident that after my years at camp and my 2 years as a camper-in-leadership training I was ready.

I was a camp counselor for 8 summers while pursuing my undergrad degree in Psychology and my Masters in Elementary Education. Camp people are a unique breed. It’s not the high paying wages, the stylish uniform or the glamorous working conditions that attract us to camp; it’s the ability to change a child’s life, to be a friend to one in need, to watch children grow and succeed, and to do it all while having as much fun as the children.

It’s a unique challenge to be called up from being one of the colleagues to now being their supervisor. It was such an honor to be asked to become part of the Director staff. I knew my love and passion for children had been noticed by all. My position as a Director is exciting; no two days are the same. I still get to work with children in addition to inspiring and evaluating colleagues and bonding with parents over their child’s ups and downs.

Camp helps me become a better teacher while being a teacher helps me become a better Camp Director. Camp allows me to be uninhibited and remain without judgment, and often childlike in my new experiences. Camp Keystone has become my family. It is where I’ve made some of my dearest friends and created a lifetime of memories.
